About this piece
Chile, La Plata and Bolivia on a map lettered "Chili, La Plata or the Argentine Republic & Bolivia", from Black's General Atlas of the World, published by A. & C. Black in 1870. The sheet is an engraved map colored by region, with the title in a ruled cartouche at lower right and the plate number at upper right.
The long, narrow strip of Chile, tinted pink, runs down the Pacific side of the sheet, with the Andes drawn in hachures, and its coast is lettered with ports and capes from top to bottom. The Argentine Republic (La Plata) is the large green block in the center, with its rivers, provincial towns and the lower course of the Parana and the Rio de la Plata at right, and Uruguay is shown in pink at the mouth of the river. Bolivia is colored yellow across the top, and Patagonia is lettered at the foot of the sheet.
The title, with its alternative names for Argentina, records a moment when the country was still known on atlases as both La Plata and the Argentine Republic.
