About this piece
Guyane, a map of French Guiana from the Petit Atlas National (Colonies Françaises), plate No. 93, published around 1835 as one of the "Cartes publiées à 10 centimes" sold by Blaisot at the Galerie Vivienne, Paris. It is an engraved sheet with the title "Guyane" and a paragraph of printed text on the colony's administration and statistics at the upper left.
Three maps share the sheet. At the lower right a general "Carte de la Guyane et de l'embouchure de l'Amazone" shows French Guiana with Dutch Guiana (Guyane Hollandaise) to the west and Brazil (Brésil) to the south, with rivers and the mouth of the Amazon along the bottom. At the upper right is a plan of the town of Cayenne, and the large map at the lower left, "Plan d'une partie de l'île de Cayenne avec l'embouchure de la rivière du même nom", covers the island, its marshes and the river mouths.
The sheet gives the colony's layout in the 1830s, with the surrounding colonial boundaries drawn only roughly.
