About this piece
A general map of North America, titled "Carte générale de l'Amérique Septentrionale," drawn by A. Brué and revised by E. Levasseur, from Levasseur's Atlas de Géographie Moderne Physique et Politique, published in 1875. The sheet is an engraved map with outline color, set within a decorative chain-pattern border and numbered in the corners.
The continent is shown from Alaska and the Arctic archipelago to Central America and the top of South America, with the Pacific labeled "Grand Océan" and the Atlantic "Océan Atlantique." Canada is tinted pink and the United States blue-green, with Mexico in yellow and orange and the small Central American republics in separate colors, while Alaska is set apart in its own tone at the upper left. The Gulf of Mexico, Cuba and the other Antilles are drawn at the lower right, and a legend at the lower left identifies the colors by nation. Rivers, lake systems and the chief towns are lettered, and Greenland appears in the northeast. The title block names Ch. Delagrave of the Institut Géographique de Paris as publisher.
The map offers a continental view of the Americas as French geography taught them in the 1870s.
