About this piece
North and Central America from Migeon's "Amerique Septentrionale," a hand-colored map from the Geographie Universelle Atlas-Migeon, published in Paris, dated 1880. The title is lettered across the top margin, and the borders of the countries are tinted in color.
The map shows the continent from the Arctic coast and Greenland at the top to the Caribbean at the foot. Canada is tinted pink, the United States blue-green with its railroads traced in black across the interior, Mexico yellow and Central America green, with the islands of the West Indies scattered across the Mer des Antilles. The Pacific is lettered "Grand Ocean Pacifique" and the Atlantic along the right, and the Gulf of Mexico is named at the center. The Great Lakes, the Mississippi system and Hudson Bay are drawn in fine detail.
A decorative vignette at the lower left shows Niagara Falls framed by palms. Migeon's atlas combined clear political geography with small pictorial scenes of this kind.
