About this piece
Northern New York in c.1888, an original map by Rand, McNally & Co. printed in black on toned paper with railroad lines overprinted in red and blue. The running head "Rand, McNally & Co.'s Northern New York" appears across the top between atlas page numbers 132 and 133.
The sheet covers the northern counties of the state, with the St. Lawrence River running diagonally across the upper left toward Canada, and Lake Ontario at the left with Ontario lettered beyond it. The counties of Clinton, Franklin, St. Lawrence, Lewis, Hamilton, Essex and Warren are lettered across the plate, and the Adirondack lakes and mountains fill the center with fine shading. Lake Champlain runs down the right edge. Railroad lines are sparse in the mountain interior and run along the river and lake edges.
An inset at the upper left, titled "Vicinity of Buffalo," shows the Niagara frontier at a larger scale, with the Canadian counties of Lincoln and Welland across the river. The sheet shows the wilderness of the Adirondacks next to the settled lake and river country that surrounds it.
