About this piece
The southern route from San Francisco to New York in four vignettes, an original wood engraving with hand color from The Graphic, a London illustrated weekly, dated October 1, 1887 in the listing. The page is headed "The Graphic" and the group is titled "On the Southern Route from San Francisco to New York".
Each scene has its own printed caption. At the top, "A Mexican house at Fort Yuma, Arizona" shows an adobe street with figures in the sun, dogs, and a man in a feathered headdress at the right. Below it, "A street scene in Dodge City, Colorado" (as captioned) shows a saloon front with a lettered sign, men on the porch and horses tethered at the rail. The large central scene, "Driving a mountain stage near Nutt, New Mexico", has a stagecoach drawn by galloping horses on a mountain road, with pines and brown hills behind. At the lower right, "A scene among the Pueblo Indians, New Mexico" looks across a broad valley to a distant pueblo, with two figures and dogs in the foreground.
The sheet is an artist's record of the railroad journey west to east along the southern line, and its captions place Dodge City in Colorado, though the town is in Kansas.
