About this piece
A map of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, titled "Johnson's Pennsylvania and New Jersey," from Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas of the World, published in New York by A.J. Johnson in 1872. The sheet is a color-printed map in a decorative chain-pattern border, with page numbers 42 and 43 in the upper corners.
Pennsylvania fills the center of the sheet, divided into counties in pink, green and yellow, with the ridges of the Appalachians drawn as parallel hatching across the middle of the state. New Jersey runs down the right-hand edge to Cape May, also in counties, with Delaware Bay and the Atlantic coast below. Lake Erie and the New York border appear at the top, and parts of Maryland, West Virginia and Virginia at the foot. Railways, canals, rivers and towns are lettered throughout, with the title at the upper right and the publisher's imprint below it.
The sheet records the counties and railroads of the two states in the early 1870s.
