About this piece
Johnson's Pennsylvania and New Jersey, a map published by Johnson and Ward in 1864, steel engraved with the counties outlined and tinted in pink and green and set within the ornamental chain border of Johnson's atlas. The title is lettered at the upper right.
The two states are drawn together on a wide sheet, with Pennsylvania across the center and New Jersey at the right, running down to the Atlantic coast. Lake Erie appears in the northwest corner. Counties, towns, railroads, canals and rivers are drawn in detail, and the ridges of the Appalachians are shown as parallel hatching running diagonally across the middle of Pennsylvania. Parts of New York, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and West Virginia, including Chesapeake Bay, appear at the edges.
The railroad network shown here reflects Pennsylvania as a leading industrial and coal state in the middle of the Civil War.
