About this piece
South America as drawn for a French atlas of the Americas, titled "Carte de l'Amérique méridionale", an original engraving with hand color from Jean Alexandre Buchon's Atlas géographique, statistique, historique et chronologique des Deux Amériques, published in 1825. A heading across the top reads "Carte géographique, statistique et historique de l'Amérique méridionale", with the sheet number in the upper right.
The map sits in the center of the sheet in bands of green, yellow, pink and blue. Its states show a very large La Plata province that includes much of Peru and all of present-day Bolivia and Argentina north of Patagonia. Rivers and coastal places are named, and the Atlantic and Pacific oceans are lettered in French. On both sides, long printed columns headed "Amérique méridionale" give the history, geography, population and economy of the continent, with tables of statistics.
Buchon (1791 to 1849) was a French historian and scholar, and his atlas was an attempt to present the Americas in a single illustrated reference at the moment when the Spanish colonies were becoming independent states.
