About this piece
South America, titled "Kaartje van het Zuider-Deel van America," an original small map from Nieuwe Natuur-, Geschied- en Handelkundige Zak- en Reisatlas by Gerrit Brender à Brandis, published by J. Keizer and I. de Lat in 1788. The sheet is printed in black with fine outline color.
The title is set in a plain frame at the lower left. The continent is drawn with its Dutch labels: Terra Ferme and the Amazon region at the top, "Zuid America" across the center, Peru and Paraguay on the Pacific side, and the Brazilian coast at the right. The oceans are lettered "De Noord Zee," "De Groote Zuid Zee of Stille Zee," "De Zuider Ocean" and "Magelanesche Zee," and the sheet is crossed by a network of rhumb lines. A scale in leagues is printed at the lower right, beside a publisher's line.
The map was made as a small atlas sheet for a pocket and travel atlas in Dutch, and its engraved coastline is dotted with small place names.
