About this piece
South America in the 1830s, titled "South America", an original engraving with hand outline color, published in London by Thomas Kelly, 17 Paternoster Row, in 1835 and engraved by A. Findlay. The map has a decorative border of bead and rosette ornaments.
The continent is drawn with its republics and colonial divisions outlined in yellow, pink, orange and green, the title is set at the lower right beside a scale of English miles, and the sea is tinted blue along the coasts. The Pacific and Atlantic Oceans are lettered at the sides, and the Atlantic is also given as the "Ethiopic or Southern Atlantic Ocean". Rivers and mountain ranges are drawn in detail, the coasts carry many place names, and the southern tip shows Tierra del Fuego and the Falkland Islands with South Georgia. A dated imprint runs along the foot of the sheet.
The border design is the main decorative element of the sheet, and the map itself is a clear picture of the states of South America in the years after independence.
