About this piece
South America from Migeon's "Amerique Meridionale," a hand-colored map from the Geographie Universelle Atlas-Migeon, published in Paris, dated 1880. The title is lettered across the top margin, and the sheet is engraved with the borders of the countries tinted in color.
The map covers the whole continent from the Caribbean coast of Colombia and Venezuela to Tierra del Fuego, with Brazil in pink dominating the center, Argentina ("Republique Argentine") in blue and Bolivia, Peru, Chile and the Guianas each in their own color. Rivers, particularly the Amazon, and the long ranges of the Andes are traced in fine detail, and the Atlantic and Pacific are lettered across the ocean. A small inset at the lower left shows the Galapagos Islands, and a scale of distances is printed at the lower right.
Two decorative vignettes accompany the map: a tropical waterfall in a forest at the upper right, and a hillside estate with palms and a river below a mountain at the lower right. Migeon's atlas combined clear mid-nineteenth century political geography with small pictorial scenes of this kind.
