About this piece

A map of Surinam on the northeast coast of South America, an original copper engraving from John Gabriel Stedman's Narrative of a five years' expedition against the revolted negroes of Surinam, published in 1813. The sheet is printed in black with the coastline and the border of the neat line outlined in color.

The map runs along the Atlantic coast from the Corentyne on the left to the French frontier at the right and reaches far inland. It marks Dutch settlements and plantations along the rivers, military posts and the camps of the rebel Maroons, as well as native villages shown by small clusters of huts. Mountains are drawn as molehills in the interior. A key at the lower right explains the symbols, including the distinction between settlements and posts. A red-outlined region around the Surinam River is lettered as the only inhabited district of the colony. The title "A Map of Surinam" sits in a vignette at the lower right, where a man with a staff stands beneath a palm. A scale of British statute miles runs along the bottom.

Stedman's account of his service with the Dutch against the runaway slaves of Surinam remains a classic source on the colony.
