About this piece
West Virginia in a color-printed county map titled "West Virginia", from the Ninth Edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, published in 1888. The sheet is engraved and printed in color, with each county tinted in pink, yellow, green or gray.
The state is drawn with the Ohio River along its western border against Ohio and Kentucky, the narrow Northern Panhandle stretching up between Ohio and Pennsylvania, and the Allegheny ridges of the eastern counties shaded in hachures against Virginia. Maryland and Pennsylvania lie to the north. County names are lettered large, and county towns and railroads are engraved throughout, with a scale of miles and a key given at the upper left. An inset at the lower right, titled "The Panhandle or Northern Part of West Virginia", reproduces the strip of counties on the same scale as the main map.
The state was admitted in 1863, carved out of Virginia during the Civil War, and this sheet shows it as a settled group of counties a generation later.
