About this piece

Harper's Ferry by moonlight, an original steel engraving published in London by Cassell and Company, Limited. The plate title "Harper's Ferry by Moonlight" is lettered in script below the image.

The view looks down the Potomac from the Maryland side toward the town, with a full moon hanging in a clouded sky and its light spread across the river. Steep, wooded cliffs close in on both sides, and the water winds away between further ridges in the distance. At the left a bridge crosses the river, and a church spire and clustered roofs lie along the shore at the center. In the foreground two small figures walk along a path through dark shrubs and trees.

Harper's Ferry sits at the meeting of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, where the line of the Blue Ridge breaks. The old description credits the drawing to J. Perkins and the engraving to R. Hinshelwood.
