About this piece

The town of Paita on the northern coast of Peru, shown in an original copper engraving from the Dutch edition of George Anson's voyage, Reize rondsom de Werreld, published in 1749. The plan is lettered in Dutch and French: "Plan van de Stad Paita in het Koninkryk Santa Fee" and "Plan de la Ville de Paita dans le Royaume de Santa Fe", with the latitude given as about 5 degrees 11 minutes south.

The town is drawn in a simple grid of rectangular blocks laid out between the sea at the bottom and the dry hills at the back, with the principal square at the center and two churches on the left beyond the town. A line of roads runs out across the open ground at the left toward the water, and the scale is given in fathoms and Rhenish roods in a bar below the town. A key of letters A to F at the foot of the sheet explains the places marked.

Anson's squadron attacked and burned Paita in November 1741, and the plan records the town as it stood at that time.
