About this piece
Portrait of Dom Pedro II, Emperor of Brazil, an original steel engraving published in Paris in 1867. The sheet is lettered "S.M. Dom Pedro II, Empereur du Brésil", engraved by Nargeot and printed by Chardon, and belongs to the same series of Latin American portraits and views as the Énault plates of 1867.
The emperor stands full length in ceremonial dress, bearded, with a short embroidered tunic, a sash across his chest and an ermine-lined cloak falling behind him. One hand rests on a table beside the imperial crown on its cushion, and a heavy draped curtain fills the background.
Dom Pedro II (1825 to 1891) was the last Emperor of Brazil, proclaimed in 1831 as a child and reigning until the monarchy was overthrown in 1889. He is remembered as a ruler who supported education, science and the arts, and Brazil abolished slavery in 1888 while he was on the throne.
