About this piece
Santa Marta, on the Caribbean coast of Colombia, an original engraving from The Universal Geography by Elisee Reclus, dated 1885. The plate title, "Santa Marta, view taken from the north", is lettered beneath the image in capitals, and the artist's signature appears in the lower right corner of the plate.
The view looks across the still water of the bay to the low town spread along the shore, with a few church towers and flat-roofed houses showing against the hills. Mountains rise behind the town in layered ranges under a cloud-filled sky. Two sailing vessels lie alongside a wooden landing at the left, and a lone figure rows a small boat in the foreground. The line work is fine and even, built up in soft gray tones that suit the hazy light of a tropical harbor.
Santa Marta was founded by the Spanish in 1525, which makes it one of the oldest European towns on the South American mainland. Reclus's Universal Geography devoted generous illustration to the coasts and cities it described.
