About this piece
Cape Horn in a gale, an original steel engraving from Meyer's Universum, published by the Bibliographisches Institut around 1850. The sheet is lettered "Cap Horn" below the image, with the imprint of the Kunstanstalt of the Bibliographisches Institut at the lower margin.
A dismasted sailing ship lies broken at the center, listing in heavy surf, with rowing boats pulling away from the wreck and a man in the foreground boat waving for help. Beyond the waves rises the dark headland of the cape under a sky of storm clouds with a bright break in the center, and a pointed peak stands at the left. Birds are visible in the upper right.
Cape Horn is the southernmost headland of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago of southern Chile, located on the small Hornos Island. Meyer's Universum, the "world in pictures" on steel engravings, was published between 1833 and 1861 in 17 volumes in 12 languages with some 80,000 subscribers across Europe.
