About this piece
Two horsemen of Chile, from Louis Isidore Duperrey's Voyage autour du monde exécuté par ordre du roi, sur la corvette de Sa Majesté, La Coquille, pendant les années 1822, 1823, 1824 et 1825. The plate is lettered "Habitans du Chili" and marked "Voy. de la Coquille" in the right margin. The lettering credits Lejeune and Chazal as draftsmen and Ambroise Tardieu as engraver, and gives the printer as the Imprimerie de Remond. The image is hand colored.
Two riders stand with their horses in a grassy plain, one on the ground beside a chestnut horse in a blue saddle cloth, the other mounted on a dappled gray. Both wear blue ponchos edged with a patterned band and pointed blue caps. A third rider and a bull are visible in the distance, at the left, and a cloud-heavy sky closes the scene.
Duperrey (1786 to 1865) was a French marine hydrographer and commander of the Coquille, whose voyage (1822 to 1825) took her to Chile, Peru, Polynesia, the Molucca Islands, New Ireland and Australia.
