About this piece
A hand-colored engraving of native peoples of the Americas, an original plate from Friedrich Justin Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder, the illustrated picture book for children published in Weimar, circa 1800. The sheet is lettered at the top "Vermischte Gegenstande CLXX" and "Melanges CLXX", the German and French captions of the plate.
Two framed scenes share the sheet. In the upper scene, six figures in a row with feather headdresses, decorated bodies and striped body paint stand on a riverbank, with trees and hills behind. The lower scene shows two groups: at the right, six figures in robes and feathers stand holding shells or rattles, while at the left four seated figures hold similar objects before a mountain landscape. The coloring is bright, in red, blue and soft green on a cream sheet.
Bertuch's Bilderbuch was published in installments from 1790 and became one of the most popular illustrated children's encyclopedias of its day, covering natural history, costume and cultures from around the world.
