About this piece
A hand-colored engraving of native peoples of the Americas, an original plate from Friedrich Justin Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder, the illustrated picture book for children published in Weimar, circa 1800. The sheet is lettered in three languages at the top, "Trachten IV", "Vestitum forma IV" and "Habillemens IV", as the plates of the work were captioned in German, Latin and French.
Five figures stand on small grassy patches. At the upper left, two people in fur-trimmed tunics with colored panels hold a long bow and arrows; at the center a man in a feathered hat and fringed long coat stands beside a basket; at the right a bare-chested figure with a feathered headdress carries a bow and arrow. Below, a couple in simple waist wraps stand in conversation, and at the lower right a woman carries a child on her back beside a man in a heavy cloak holding a staff.
Bertuch's Bilderbuch was an encyclopedic picture book of natural history, costume and culture, aimed at young readers.
