About this piece
A set of eight engraved sheets on the Native peoples of North America, from the Iconographic Encyclopaedia of the Arts and Sciences, the work of Johann Georg Heck as revised and edited for American use by Daniel Brinton. Each sheet is headed "Americans" and carries a plate number and numbered captions beneath the images.
Two of the sheets are single large scenes: a crowded outdoor gathering of figures around a banner pole, and the crowded interior of a lodge with figures seated by the fire and weapons hung overhead. The other six are plates of grouped small subjects: costume figures and portraits, pipes, clubs, shields and headdresses, war and hunting implements, pottery and earthwork plans, and tents and dwellings, among them a conical tipi and a raised platform on posts. The engravings are in black and white on toned paper with fine line shading, and the captions beneath each plate identify the figures and objects by number.
The set gives a general survey of Native American material culture as encyclopedic illustration of the 1850s presented it.
