About this piece
Buffalo, New York, seen from above, an engraving with color from Picturesque America, published in New York by D. Appleton and Company in 1872. The plate title is engraved beneath the image: "City of Buffalo."
The view looks down from a height over rooftops and tree-lined avenues, with a long straight street running to the distance and a house with a small tower in the center of its grounds. Smoke from steamers and the harbor rises along the shoreline, and Lake Erie fills the horizon under a pale sky. The foreground is a dense mass of foliage, with roofs and chimneys emerging between the trees.
Picturesque America, edited by William Cullen Bryant and issued in parts between 1872 and 1874, was the most ambitious illustrated survey of the American landscape of its time, and its views of cities, rivers and mountains are among the best-known American steel engravings of the period. Buffalo, at the eastern end of Lake Erie, was the western terminus of the Erie Canal and a major lake port.
