About this piece

The river and harbor of San Julian in Patagonia, an original copper engraving lettered "De Rivier van St. Juliaan" above and "De Haven van Sint Juliaan" below, from Reize rondsom de Werreld, gedaan in de Jaaren 1740 tot 1744, the Dutch edition of Richard Walter's A Voyage Round the World, first published in 1749. This sheet is dated 1765.

The upper view shows a wide river at low water, with a small two-masted vessel under sail in the foreground, a flat shore beyond and distant hills at the right. The lower view looks along the harbor, with two small vessels at anchor in the shallows and a distant sail, and a note in Dutch that the island Goed Recht lies off the mouth of the river.

The book is the official account of George Anson's voyage of circumnavigation, compiled from his journals by Richard Walter, chaplain on board the Centurion, and revised by Benjamin Robins. Anson's squadron was sent in 1740 to attack Spanish possessions on the west coast of South America. It lost most of its ships around Cape Horn, and fewer than 350 of 960 men survived, but Anson persevered in the Centurion and captured a galleon laden with gold near Manila.
