About this piece

Two coastal views near Cape Horn from the voyage of George Anson around the world, an engraving from a Dutch edition of Anson's "Reize rondsom de Werreld", published around 1760. The captions are in Dutch: "De Straat Le Maire tusschen Tierra del Fuego en Staaten Land" and "De Westzyde van 't Staaten Eiland". The plate is numbered "N°. 7" at the upper left.

The sheet is divided into two long, narrow strips. The upper view shows a line of ships under sail in the strait, with the broken coast of Tierra del Fuego low at the left and the mountains of Staten Land (Isla de los Estados) at the right, under a dark squall. In the lower view, a serrated row of peaks marks the west side of Staten Island on the horizon, with two sailing ships on the open sea.

Anson's squadron sailed in 1740 and returned in 1744, and passed through the Strait Le Maire before rounding Cape Horn. Coastal profiles of this kind were engraved so that later navigators could identify these landfalls.
