About this piece
South America in 1884, an original engraved map titled "South America", prepared by the Scottish cartographer John Bartholomew and published in Edinburgh by A. & C. Black in the new and revised edition of Black's General Atlas of the World. The countries are colored by hand in pastel pink, yellow, green and purple.
The sheet shows the whole continent from the Caribbean Sea to Cape Horn, with the Pacific Ocean on the left and the Atlantic on the right. Brazil, in yellow, dominates the center and east, with the Amazon and its tributaries traced across it. The Andes run down the west coast through Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Chile, and Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay fill the south and the Río de la Plata region. The Falkland Islands are drawn off the southern coast, and the Tropics of Capricorn are marked across the sheet. Cities, ports and rivers are lettered along the coasts and inland.
An atlas sheet of the whole continent shows the political divisions of South America in the 1880s, with Brazil still an empire.
