About this piece

A native of Bahia in Brazil, an original lithograph from H. R. Schinz's Naturgeschichte und Abbildungen der Menschen und der Säugethiere, published around 1845. The plate is lettered "Neger von Baiha", with "Lith. v. Honegger" at lower left and a draftsman's credit at lower right, and carries a plate number in the upper right corner.

A man sits on a large rock with one knee drawn up, holding his foot and looking up and away. He wears a striped shirt open at the neck, short breeches belted at the waist, a head cloth and a ring in the ear, and at his feet on the ground lies a flat dish with three fish. The drawing is done in soft lithographic gray, with the rock and ground modeled in heavy shading and the white of the paper left for the lights.

The title uses the German form of the period, and spells Bahia as "Baiha" on the sheet.
