About this piece
Northwestern South America in 1884, an original engraved map titled "Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru &c.", prepared by the Scottish cartographer John Bartholomew and published in Edinburgh by A. & C. Black in the new and revised edition of Black's General Atlas of the World. The sheet is numbered 49 at the upper right and colored by hand to separate the countries.
The map runs from the Caribbean coast down the Pacific side of the continent. Colombia appears in orange, Venezuela in purple at the top right, Ecuador in green and Peru in pink, with parts of Brazil and Bolivia on the east and south. The Andes divide into ranges through Colombia and Ecuador, and the upper Amazon, the Orinoco and the Magdalena are traced, together with ports and towns along both coasts. The shapes of the Gulf of Maracaibo and the Gulf of Guayaquil stand out.
The sheet shows the Andean republics as they were drawn in the early 1880s.
