About this piece
A country road near La Guaira on the Venezuelan coast, an original lithograph from Karl Martin's Bericht uber eine Reise nach Niederlandisch West-Indien, published at Leiden by E. J. Brill in 1888. The plate is lettered "Tab. XIX" at the upper right and is printed in gray with a buff tint stone.
A rutted dirt road curves from the lower left into the middle of the picture, edged on the left by a low wall of loose stones. Beside it a small hut stands with a steeply sloping roof of palm thatch and walls of woven matting, and a chicken walks along the road near it. Dense trees and shrubs fill the sides and background, three tall coconut palms rise against a sky of soft clouds, and a small sail is visible on the sea at the far left.
La Guaira was the port of Caracas, and Martin, a professor of geology at Leiden, traveled through the region on the way to the Dutch West Indies. The view is one of the landscape plates he used to illustrate the places he visited, as a contrast to the maps and specimen plates of the report.
