About this piece
Wheeling on the Ohio River, an original steel engraving of about 1850 from Meyer's Universum, lettered "Wheeling in Virginia". The Bibliographisches Institut imprint appears in the lower margin, and the sheet is printed in black on cream paper with wide margins.
The view is taken from a wooded hillside above the town. In the foreground a stagecoach drawn by horses climbs a road at the left, while tall trees with trailing vines frame the scene on both sides. Below, the town spreads down to the river in clustered roofs, with smoke rising from works at the upper left. The long span of the Wheeling Suspension Bridge crosses the Ohio in the middle distance, a steamboat lies beside it, and low wooded hills close the horizon.
The bridge was completed in 1849. The title places Wheeling in Virginia, as it was until West Virginia was formed during the Civil War, and the town was also the western end of the National Road.
