About this piece

Campeche in New Spain, an original engraving published at Leiden by Pieter van der Aa after Carel Allard, around 1720. The small framed vignette sits in the center of a large sheet with wide blank margins, and a title banner appears across the sky.

Two local figures stand in the foreground on a bare shore. The man at the left wears a feathered cap and a short tunic with a cape of hide, and he carries a long paddle-shaped club and a staff. The man at the right is wrapped in a long cloak with a round shield or bundle at his side. Behind them a fortified town with towers, flags and ramparts stands on the water's edge, with a ship at anchor in front of it and hills rising at the right. The engraving is in line and hatching alone, without coloring.

Pieter van der Aa's collections of voyages and travel accounts often paired costume figures with a view of the place being described, and this plate follows that pattern for Campeche, a Spanish port on the Gulf coast of the Yucatan peninsula.
