About this piece
Cayenne, the chief town of French Guiana, seen from rising ground above the coast, an original wood engraving with later hand color from V.-A. Malte-Brun's La France Illustrée, 1883. The page is headed "La France Illustrée par V.-A. Malte-Brun" with a small crowned shield, the view is titled "Cayenne" beneath the image, and the sheet is numbered "103. Colonies d'Amérique et d'Océanie (1)".
The view looks across a tangle of green foliage in the foreground to the roofs of the town, a loose cluster of low wooden houses with red-brown pitched roofs and pale walls, spread among palms and trees. Beyond them the coast curves away to the left, with the sea as a flat gray band under a heavily clouded sky, and a long, low range of hills closes the view at the right. A track winds through the scrub at the lower left. The color is applied in washes of green, red-brown, gray and blue over the engraved lines.
La France Illustrée was Malte-Brun's illustrated geography of France, and this plate comes from its section on the French colonies in America and Oceania, which is why a view of a Guianese town appears among the French departments.
