About this piece

A Vanity Fair caricature captioned "New York Tribune", published in London in September 1902. The sheet is a chromolithograph, signed with the "Spy" monogram and printed by Vincent Brooks, Day & Son, with the Vanity Fair masthead and date at the top.

An elderly gentleman with white hair and a neat white beard stands in profile against a gray-green ground. He wears a dark frock coat and striped trousers, holds a pair of pince-nez on a cord in one hand and a slip of paper in the other. The caption names the newspaper, not the man: the New-York Tribune was founded in 1841 by the editor Horace Greeley. As in every plate of the series, the figure is drawn at full length with a caricaturist's emphasis on posture and dress.

Vanity Fair issued one such colored plate with most weekly numbers, and its "Men of the Day" series included a regular stream of American financiers, editors and sportsmen who passed through London.
