About this piece
The city of Albany across the Hudson River, an original copper engraving published in London by Fisher, Son and Co. in 1827. The plate title "City of Albany, in the State of New York" is lettered below the image, and the credits read "Drawn by G. Kane" and "Engraved by T. Dixon."
The foreground is a grassy bank on the near shore, with a clapboard farmhouse at the right, a woman scattering feed among poultry, cattle resting at the left, and a rail fence leading in. The river opens beyond, with a steamboat trailing smoke at the left and a sloop under full sail at the center. On the opposite shore the city rises on its hill, with rooftops, church spires and a domed public building at the top, under a sky of heavy cumulus.
Fisher, Son and Co. published many views of American towns for the British market in the 1820s and 1830s. Albany, at the head of navigation on the Hudson, was a river port and the capital of New York State, and this view shows steamboats and sailing craft already sharing its waterfront.
