About this piece
Extrémité Méridionale de l'Amérique, an original copper engraved map of Tierra del Fuego and the Strait of Magellan by Rigobert Bonne, engraved by André, from the Atlas de toutes les parties connues du globe terrestre, c.1780. The title is lettered in a cartouche at the lower center, and the sheet carries a reference to Cook's third voyage in the upper left corner.
The main map shows the southern tip of the continent with Patagonia to the north, the Strait of Magellan winding across the top, and the islands of Tierra del Fuego below, with Staten Island and the Cape Horn region at the lower right, around a large compass rose. Five inset maps, framed in the corners and along the bottom, give detailed plans of harbors and channels with soundings and anchorages, among them the Canal de Noël and the coast north of Cap des Vierges, as well as the Isles de Nouvel An (New Year's Islands).
Rigobert Bonne (1727 to 1795) was one of the most important cartographers of his time. In 1773 he succeeded Jacques Bellin as hydrographer at the Dépôt de la Marine, and his maps are noted for their detail and for their plain, utilitarian aesthetic.
