About this piece

"The Inhabitants of Terra del Fuego", an original copper engraving published "as the Act directs" by Harrison and Co. on 1 December 1783. It is printed in black, with the artist and engraver credits in small lettering below the image.

The scene is set before a shelter made of boughs, a domed hut of branches with a fire burning at its mouth. Around the fire a man and woman sit with a child, another figure stands behind them, and a man kneels on the right feeding the flames. At the left a man walks past carrying a long spear over his shoulder, and a seated figure and other huts stand beyond. A crooked tree spreads across the top, and in the background are jagged snowy peaks and a stretch of sea with a rocky headland.

The print is one of the early engraved views of the Fuegians, published at a time when European readers had little visual knowledge of the southernmost tip of South America.
