About this piece
Paraguay, Chili, Terre Magellan?, a decorative copper engraved map of the southern part of South America by Robert de Vaugondy, revised and corrected by C.F. Delamarche, 1806. The title appears in a framed cartouche at the lower right, lettered "Par Robert de Vaugondy, revu et corrigé par C.F. Delamarche son successeur". The countries are washed in pink, orange, green and yellow in hand color, with a yellow border.
The map covers the continent from Peru and Brazil south to the Strait of Magellan. Chili and the Andes run down the left side, with the offshore islands of Chiloe named, and Paraguay fills the center with the provinces of the Rio de la Plata and Buenos Aires on the coast. Below them stretch the "Grandes Plaines nommées Pampas" and the lands of the Patagonians, with the southern tip labeled Terre Magellanique and the Falklands shown as the Malouines. The Tropic of Capricorn crosses the map, and scales of French leagues are given at the right.
Charles Francois Delamarche (1740 to 1817) founded the Paris firm of Delamarche after acquiring the map plates and copyrights of Robert de Vaugondy.
