About this piece
Gray-winged trumpeter, a hand-colored lithograph by Carl Wilhelm Hahn from his Vögel aus Asien, Africa, America & Neuholland in Abbildungen nach der Natur, published by Lechner in Nuremberg and dated about 1820. The plate is listed in Nissen's bibliography of zoological books as Nissen 403.
The lettering reads "IIte Lieferung 6te Tafel" at the upper right, "Psophia crepitans. Linn." and "Goldbrüstiger Trompetenvogel." at the foot, and "nach der Natur gezeichnet von C.W. Hahn" in the lower right corner. The bird stands in profile on a patch of green grass: a dark, long-necked body with a glossy blue-violet patch at the breast, gray folded wings, a short yellow-green bill and long yellow-green legs. Above it, in plain gray pencil-like shading, is a separate study of the bird's head.
Psophia crepitans is a ground-dwelling bird of the forests of northern South America, and its German name here, the gold-breasted trumpeter, refers to the sheen on the breast. Hahn's series was issued in numbered parts (Lieferungen), each with its own plates.
