About this piece

Maximilian I, Emperor of Mexico, an original steel engraving from Louis Énault's L'Amérique centrale et méridionale, published in Paris in 1867. The sheet is lettered "S.M. Maximilien I., Empereur du Mexique" and was engraved by Nargeot and printed by Chardon.

The emperor stands full length, bearded, with one hand on a sceptre set beside a cushioned table and the other on his sword. He wears a military uniform with a sash and an ermine-lined cloak that falls to the floor, and behind him hangs a heavy fringed curtain. A pattern of the imperial emblem is worked into the carpet at his feet.

Archduke Maximilian of Austria (1832 to 1867) accepted the Mexican throne under French sponsorship and reigned from 1864. His government collapsed after French troops withdrew, and he was captured and executed at Querétaro in 1867, the year this volume appeared.
