About this piece
Danze de' Chiliesi, a dance of the people of Chile, from Giulio Ferrario's Il Costume Antico e Moderno, an etching with aquatint and original hand color on wove paper. It is lettered "Tavole XXVIII. Danze de' Chiliesi" and was engraved by Paolo Fumagalli after Bramati, with credits at the foot of the plate. The title field dates it 1827, while the old description gives 1821, the date of the Italian volume.
About twenty men form a ring around a central pole flying a long yellow pennant, with a few more in a second knot in the foreground and one seated at the base of the pole beside three clay jars. All wear short colored vests in pink, blue, yellow and green, short trousers, and feathers in their headbands, and they hold hands as they circle on an open, sandy plain with low brush at the edges.
The first issue of Ferrario's work appeared in Milan in 17 volumes between about 1815 and 1826; a second issue in 21 volumes followed in 1827.
