About this piece

Niagara Falls in a small copper engraving, with the caption "Falls of Niagara, on the River St. Lawrence in Canada" lettered below the image. The sheet is dated 1816.

The falls are shown from the lower river bank, with the water spreading in a broad, even crest across the middle of the view. A rock tower with trees on its top stands in the center of the cataract, and a great plume of spray drifts up and across the right side. Three small figures stand at the lower left, near a tree on the rocky shore, which gives some sense of scale. The ground in the foreground is rough with scrub, and low wooded hills and heavy clouds close the distance.

The caption puts the falls on the St. Lawrence rather than the Niagara River. It reflects the geography as it was summarized in some European atlases and compendiums of the period, in which the great lakes and their outflow were treated as parts of the St. Lawrence system.
