About this piece

Franklin Valley in the Great Basin, an original steel engraving from the Pacific Railroad Surveys, taken from the report of the exploration of the 41st parallel led by Lieutenant Edward G. Beckwith (volume II). The heading at the top of the sheet reads "U.S.P.R.R. Expl. & Surveys 41st Parallel" and "Expl. by Lieut. Beckwith, Vol. II," and the caption below gives the title "Franklin Valley" with the view taken from a spur of the Humboldt Mountains.

A Native hunter reclines on a rocky ledge in the left foreground with a bow in his hand and a quiver beside him, with a dog resting at his feet. Jagged pinnacles of rock rise steeply at the right, and below them the wide, flat valley floor stretches away to a far range of snow-flecked mountains under a pale sky. The names of the engraver and the Washington engraving and printing house appear in the lower margin, with a short line of text lettered beneath the image.

The Pacific Railroad Surveys were government expeditions of the 1850s sent to find routes for a railroad to the Pacific, and their reports were illustrated with engraved views of the country the parties crossed.
