About this piece
French Guiana and the Amazon mouth, an original steel engraving from the Petit Atlas National (Colonies françaises), issued by Blaisot in Paris around 1826. The sheet is titled "Guyane" and carries three maps and a block of printed text. It is lettered at the top "Cartes publiées à 10 centimes par Blaisot" and at the foot "Gravé sur acier par Aubry, Rue des Mathurins St. Jacques, Paris."
The principal map, "Carte de la Guyane et de l'embouchure de l'Amazone," covers the northern coast of South America with Guyane Hollandaise (Suriname), Guyane Française and the Brazilian territory to the south. Rivers, settlements and the course of the Amazon at the lower right are shown. Above it, at the upper right, is the "Plan de la Ville de Cayenne," showing the fortified town and its street grid. At the lower left, "Plan d'une partie de l'Ile de Cayenne avec l'embouchure de la rivière du même nom" shows the island with its rivers and wooded areas. The text block at the upper left describes the administrative divisions, the districts and the products of the colony.
Atlases of this kind gave French readers a compact survey of each overseas possession.
