About this piece

Two figures from the "Types Mexicains" series, an original hand-colored steel engraving from Louis Énault's L'Amérique centrale et méridionale, published in Paris in 1867. The sheet is lettered "Indien revenant du marché" and "La Marchande de charbon", engraved by Ferdinand Delannoy after a drawing by Gustave Janet and printed by Chardon.

The two figures meet on a path in a dry landscape of agave and prickly pear. On the left a man in a straw hat and a loose shirt bends forward under a load, with a bundle across his back and small goods hanging from a short pole in his hands. On the right a woman in a headscarf, a white blouse and a long dark skirt carries a tall bundle of charcoal on her back and holds a stick.

The plates of this series gave European readers a view of Mexican trades and costume, here lightly colored by hand over the engraved lines.
