About this piece
Five North American scenes on a single sheet: the Missouri River, Lake Champlain, New York harbor, the San Francisco waterfront and a cotton harvest. The print is an original engraving printed in sepia tones, issued in Haarlem in 1879 by J.M. Schalekamp and G. van den Berg in De Werelddeelen (The Continents), written by Jan Cornelis van den Berg and based largely on Friedrich von Hellwald's Die Erde und ihre Völker.
The scenes are numbered and captioned in Dutch beneath the images: "1. Gezicht op den Missouri. 2. Het Champlain-meer. 3. Gezicht op een haven van New-York. 4. De kade van San-Francisco. 5. De katoenoogst." At the top, a sidewheel steamboat trails smoke beside a snag-strewn bank on the Missouri, and a small boat with figures crosses Lake Champlain beneath distant mountains and a large tree. The broad New York view shows a rowboat in the foreground, sailing vessels and a domed fortification at the left. The San Francisco scene has two large paddle steamers at a crowded wharf, and at the bottom workers pick and carry cotton among palms and a thatched hut.
Together the vignettes give a Dutch reader's survey of American rivers, ports and plantation agriculture in the late 1870s.
