About this piece
"The Literary Map of Los Angeles", a pictorial map illustrated by Linda Ayriss with graphic design by Susan Lewis, published in Los Angeles by Aaron Blake Publishers in 1987. It is a color print, issued as a folding pocket map with an illustrated cover.
The city is drawn as a large blue swimming pool, with the principal streets and freeways forming the map on its surface and numbered white dots marking more than 120 places linked to 65 writers. Around the pool, an evening party in a Hollywood-style palm-fringed setting is peopled with portraits of authors, with their names lettered along the lower edge. They include William Saroyan, Henry Miller, S. J. Perelman, Langston Hughes, Dorothy Parker, Anaïs Nin, Ayn Rand, William Faulkner, L. Frank Baum, Nathanael West, Ray Bradbury, Aldous Huxley, Tennessee Williams, John Steinbeck, Raymond Chandler, Christopher Isherwood, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Thomas Mann.
A key across the bottom of the sheet lists the writers with the addresses and haunts tied to each, set in columns on a parchment-toned ground. The David Rumsey Historical Map Collection and the Library of Congress both record the work.
