About this piece
Monte Video, the residence of Daniel Wadsworth in Connecticut, an original steel engraving of about 1830, lettered "Monte Video, the Residence of D. Wadsworth, Esq." in the decorative border below the view.
A white house stands in a green valley at the left, with a river or lake in the right foreground and a boat on the water. A wooded ridge rises at the right, and a tower stands on its crest, the lookout that was a feature of the property. A seated figure on the bank in the foreground looks out over the water, and birds fly in the sky. Further hills close the horizon.
The view is set in an ornamental border of scrolling foliage, with a small vignette at the top and two historical vignettes in the lower corners, in which groups of figures in older dress can be made out. Monte Video was the country seat of Daniel Wadsworth of Hartford, a patron of the painter Thomas Cole.
