About this piece
Johnson's Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island, a map published by Johnson and Ward in 1864, steel engraved with the counties outlined and tinted in pink and green and set within the ornamental chain border of Johnson's atlas.
The three states cover the sheet from the Berkshire hills at the western edge to the Atlantic, with Massachusetts across the top, Connecticut below, and Rhode Island at the right. County lines, towns, railroads and rivers are drawn in detail, and Long Island and Long Island Sound appear along the bottom. Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard curl out at the lower right, and the title block is at the upper right with a note and a scale of miles.
The close network of railroads and towns makes this a good record of a densely settled region on the eve of the 1860s.
