About this piece
North America in c.1888, an original color-printed map by Rand, McNally & Co., with the political divisions tinted in pastel yellow, pink and green. The title "North America" is lettered at the lower left, and the running head "Rand, McNally & Co.'s North America" appears in the right margin beside atlas page numbers 20 and 21.
The continent is shown on an upright sheet from the Arctic to Central America. "British North America" is lettered across Canada, the United States is tinted state by state with its territories, and Mexico and Central America fill the south. The West Indies are lettered at the lower right and Greenland at the upper right, and the northern edge of the sheet is lettered "Unknown Region." A small inset at the left shows the Aleutian Islands. Lines of longitude and latitude curve across the sheet and a scale is given at the lower left.
The sheet records the continent as it was drawn in the late 1880s, with the Arctic still largely blank and the western United States divided into territories.
